Moving from Toggl Track

Bringing your Toggl Track time entries across, one exported file per year, with nothing to map.

Toggl Track exports its time entries as a CSV file whose columns Alba Ticket knows, so a Toggl file imports with nothing to set up: each entry becomes an activity of the person it names, under the client and project it was on, with its tags as labels, its task as a label, and whether it was billable. It goes through the time entries import, which this page walks through with Toggl's own file.

Export from Toggl

  1. Log into Toggl Track.
  2. Open Settings (the gear).
  3. Choose Data export, then Time entries.
  4. Enter the year to export.
  5. Click Export time entries.

The file holds that year's entries. To bring several years across, export each year and import the files one after another; an entry that came with an earlier file is recognised and not made twice.

Import into Alba Ticket

Open Administration, Imports, Time entries, upload the file, and confirm the mapping the page suggests: Email for the person, Client for the customer, Project, Description, Start date with Start time, End date with End time, Tags, Billable and Task. Choose the time zone the entries were tracked in: Toggl writes local times without an offset, so the zone tells Alba Ticket what they mean.

Then Dry run to see the counts, and Import.

What comes across

In Toggl In Alba Ticket
User, Email The entry's author, matched by email address. An administrator's import can make a placeholder for an address nobody in the workspace has.
Client A customer, found or created by name.
Project A project under that customer, found by name or key, or created with a key made from its name.
Description The activity's description.
Start date, Start time, End date, End time The start and end, in the zone you chose; an entry that runs past midnight ends the next day.
Duration Used only when an end is missing.
Tags Labels. A label that is a ticket's key links the entry to the ticket.
Task A label, unless you drop the column.
Billable Billable.
Amount Not imported: rates and amounts come from the customer's contract here.

Toggl gives its entries no id in the file, so an entry is recognised by its author, start and description: that is what stops a second import of the same file, or an overlap between two years' files, from doubling anything.
